AlohaCare Believes in Me Scholarship
In April 2003, Kuuilei Barido accepted an invitation to participate in our first member Lunch and Talk Story on Maui. During this focus group, Kuulei and three other young moms shared an idea on how AlohaCare could make a difference in the lives of health plan members. “It would be great if AlohaCare could help low-income students go to or go back to college,” they recommended.
We listened. In late 2003, AlohaCare established the “AlohaCare Believes in Me Scholarship” for University of Hawaii students. Scholarships are for both UH Community Colleges and University campuses in the state. Students who are pursuing a medical or health care profession and have financial needs are considered for scholarships up to $2,500 each year. Since 2003, AlohaCare has awarded more than 200 scholarships to Hawaii students who want to make a difference in improving the health care of their communities.
The criteria for the AlohaCare Believes in Me scholarship are:
- Must be a Hawaii resident
- Must be attending to any campus within the University of Hawaii system
- Enrolled as a full or part-time classified graduate or undergraduate student
- Able to demonstrate financial need
To help address the health care shortage in rural areas, preferences will be given to students from a neighbor island (other than Oahu) and/or graduates from a neighbor island high school. Special consideration will also be given to students pursuing studies in health care or health-related fields.
